The Experiment

So this is not a training guide. We have no idea how successful this type of training will be we only have a theory to run on. The plan is to go from relatively untrained to the Golden Ultra in just under 4 months of training. This training will only have 5 weeks of concurrent cardio training with the largest portion being heavily concentrated on weight lifting. This is an experiment in both unconventional training methods and prehabilitation (recognizing and intervening bio-mechanical deficiency before injury occurs). This is made possible by the training methodology and expertise of Trevor Macintyre along with access to the facilities at Whyte Avenue Chiropractic and Wellness Centre.

A bit about the people involved:

Trevor Macintyre, The Designer, graduated from the University of Alberta where he completed his Bachelor of Exercise Sciences [Double Major in Active Living/ Well Being and Sport Performance], Minor in Sport Psychology. Trevor is also a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Upon graduating Trevor worked as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the UofA. Trevor has over 15 years of training experience with a heavy focus on high level athletes.

David Connick, the Chiropractor/Guinea pig, I began my post secondary at the U of A before transferring to Palmer College of Chiropractic where I finished my Bachelors in General Sciences and continued onto my Doctorate in Chiropractic. Board certified in both the USA and Canada. Continued education in Kinesio Taping and Shockwave Therapy. I work at Whyte Avenue Chiropractic and Wellness Centre where I see patients from all walks of life both athlete and non-athlete alike. As far as athletic background I played multiple sports growing up finally focusing on football until a career ending shoulder injury during my first season on the Golden Bears. Since then exercise has been sporadic. As far as running history I have completed the Bix 7 Road Race when I lived in the US and last October was a part of a MEC 10k which I completed in just over 50 minutes.
Also while in the USA I won the inaugural bacon eating contest held at Baconpalooza in Burlington Iowa...Not technically related but it was a competition..and clearly I worked up a sweat.
So you could say this Ultra will be a little out of my comfort zone..

I've got a lot to catch up on since we are already a month into training. More in the coming days!
